You have probably heard the term Superfruits and you may be wondering what it means.

It refers to a group of fruits that are exceptionally high in antioxidant power, vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients.

What sets these particular fruits apart from others is their nutrient profile, which is superior by far to other fruits.

Some of these fruits would be considered exotic in most parts of the world, such as noni fruit and acai berry. Others are fairly common, for example, blueberries and pomegranate.

As stated above, what all these fruits, exotic or otherwise, have in common, is their exceptionally high antioxidant profile. It is in the colourful berries (or their skins) or in the pulp of the fruit that these powerful substances are found. Antioxidants have the ability to quench free radical damage, which is a normal byproduct of our body’s metabolism. Many of them also have potent anti-inflammatory properties. These two factors, the ability to fight free radical damage and the ability to reduce inflammation, make these fruits particularly helpful in the prevention of and lessening the severity of many common ailments, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and certain degenerative diseases.

Today there are numerous ways to enjoy the health-enhancing benefits of Superfruits. They are showing up everywhere in the marketplace today – in a wide range of products from candies to cosmetics to enery drinks. Of course, whenever possible, eating these fruits in their fresh raw form is preferable. Blueberries are an obvious example of a fruit we can enjoy seasonally (preferably the wild variety). To consume some of the more exotic fruits like mangosteen or noni, probably a liquid would be the way to go. Goji berries are very tangy and can be enjoyed by the handful or sprinkled on your cereal or yogurt.

However you do it, it’s a great idea to add Superfruits to your daily diet. These health-promoting gifts from Mother Nature will reward you by promoting an enhanced quality of life.
