Better Than Take-Out! Pepper Steak and Onions Recipe

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today we had to go to the grocery for staples like milk and bread but since we were there we picked up some items that were on sale. One of those items were a couple small steaks on the sale rack. When I see cheap steak I automatically think of pepper steak and onions(one of my husband's, @lexikon082, favorite meals )

It is so easy to make and all I had to get was the steak and the green peppers. Today I mixed it up a little because I had a bag of pepper stir fry that had everything I already put in the meal. so yay for not having to do half a night of chopping veggies! So let's start with the ingredients.

Ingredients

1 lb. Boneless Top Sirloin Steak

1 T. soy sauce

1 T. Worcestershire sauce

1 t. corn starch

2 medium sized bell peppers

1 onion, cut in small wedges

Cooked rice

I fix everything in one pan beside the rice; which I make in a rice cooker. I always use my electric skillet and it works perfectly for this meal. Before you get started you need to tenderize your meat with a heavy meat tenderizer. This makes a cheap cut of beef so much more tender and the texture is much better. Just hit it a few times on each side. This is also a good time to chop your veggies!

Now add a little oil in the bottom of your pan( I didn't put this in the ingredients because you just need a small amount to coat the bottom) and let it heat up. Add the steak, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce then cooks about 3 minutes on each side then take out of the pan.

Yes, I leave it a little bloody; that way when you add it back to the pan later it will finish cooking plus it makes it stay juicier when you do it this way. Now add your cornstarch to the pan and let it thicken the juices from the meat. Sometimes I add a little extra of both sauces at this point if I feel like there isn't enough liquid for the veggies. Just a couple dashes of each works fine. Add your veggies and stir around' then let cook until everything gets tender or to your liking. I prefer mine to still have a little crunch to it but my husband isn't a huge fan of onions unless they are cooked through so I usually leave it on about 10 minutes before I add the meat back in. Let it all simmer then it should look like this.

Now just put some rice down on a plate and add this on top and you are good to go with a meal that everybody loves and it's so much cheaper than getting take-out! Plus this is minimal clean up so it's a win win:)
