Shelves of Processed Food

Source

Nowadays processed food plays a large part in many people's diets, but is it good for us?

It's easy to prepare processed food and means foods are available even when they are not in season. A tin or bag of frozen food is so convenient.

Processed food is useful to people who don't have the time or inclination to prepare food or even cook it. It's so easy to open a tin a spag bol that might have taken an hour to make yourself.

Although some processed foods still have a high nutritional value, many lose their dietary fibre content. Others lose water content and so increase their calorific value.

Also, many of these foods, especially canned or pickled products, suffer from a loss of minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, as well as some vitamins, while a large amount of salt is added. As well as added salt, sugar and fats are also increased in many processed food to make it more flavoursome.

Think carefully about the processed food you eat. Do you think it is healthier than fresh food?

That's why I try to buy more food at the farmers market. It's much healthier, although it is more time consuming. Thanks for sharing this post.

Me too, although I have no farmer's market. I buy in greengrocers.

While having processed foods at a moment's notice is nice, I wouldn't say processed foods are healthier for the reasons you stated above. I personally try to limit eating processed foods as much as I can and watch my salt and sugar intakes. I am a bit prone to migraines, so processed foods, such as some cheeses, meats, etc, end up giving me some of the worst migraines if I eat too much. Ever since I chose my food choices more carefully my migraines have basically become nonexistent other than the occasional headache. I know I'm not perfect with my diet, but I do what I can.

That is horrible for you. Maybe try to eat fresh food when you can. Thank you for your upvote.

I don’t like processed foods for any reason even though they’ve come to stay, I try as much as possible in minimizing the intake especially with my kids, as for me, I pray I could them entirely!

Thanks @deemarshall for the insight

That is the best way, I think.
