In my last post on Roselle plant, I discussed on the health benefits of roselle plants and also on another post, I discussed on how it could be used to make roselle juice . Now today, I want to discuss how this roselle plant can be used to make a very delicious soup called Roselle soup (isapa soap in Yoruba in the western part of Nigeria).

In making Isapa soap you will require some other ingredients apart from just the roselle calyx depending on what you want to add to it as well, but here in my preparation, below are the list of ingredients I do use;

  • Roselle calyx
  • Palm oil
  • Seasonings and salt
  • Locus beans
  • Grinded melon seed (egunsi)
  • Vegetable of choice (ugwu is mine)
  • Fish, cray fish, diced beaf, stocked fish
  • Grinded tomatoes, pepper and onions to taste.

Prepartions;

  • The first stage is to soak your dried or fresh roselle calyx in hot water if dried or just warm water when it is fresh, then ash is added to it and left overnight to soak ( this is to make it soft and as well as reduce the sour taste (ash addition) in roselle catyl), after that, you should rinse in clean water and put in a plate.,

you can as well soak your stocked fish with salt to make it soft now,

  • After this you should pot your pot on fire, add palm oil and allow to get hot enough.

  • Mix your grinded melon seed with water and make it pastry, now fry in the palm oil for some minute keep stirring it to avoid it from getting burnt image

  • You add your grinded pepper, tomatoes and onions, then you allow it to boil for like 5 minutes,

  • Now you add your add your salt and seasonings to taste, leave to steam up for like 2 minutes,

  • Add your fish, crayfish, diced beef, and soaked stocked fish as well to the above and allow to steam up for another 10 min.

  • Finally add you vegetable , mix and allow to steam up for like 3 minute and your isapa soup is done…

Both the preparation and the soup itself look like egusi soup. I have never heard Ishapa soup. Well nice cooking, for a man,i like to tasete it too to see difference between it and egusi.

You really need to have a taste of it 😉
