Is chili a soup?

I have to disagree with both of you. Chili is chili. It is the heartiest of soul foods, and that, therein, means it shall not be qualified into an existing category of spoon slurped nourishment. Just as one does not say "Chili soup," one must not call it "Chili stew." If done right, the ratio of meat to liquid is substantially higher than that of both soup and stew, and with that, I rest my case.

hmmm, I like this answer!! There are indeed lots of different chili's....beef chili, vegie chili, vegan chili, chicken chili.

Chili is chili!! Soup is soup! Stew is stew!

I think "Chili is Chili"

Yes yes yes! And similarly, a Thai Green Curry is a not a soup or a stew either. "Soup" and "stew" are not some kind of fundamental categories of food; they are products of a certain range of cultures.

This annoys me as much as the infuriating "pear ciders" flooding the market. Cider is made from apples. If you make an alcoholic beverage from pears, it's called "perry"!
