Onigiri

Has anyone else been binge-watching a whole lot of anime?

After watching all these anime characters go out on so many romantic picnics with bento boxes full of onigiri rice, I decided that this was something I had to eat.

I've never made sushi rice before, but I absolutely love sushi rice and I know how to recognize that unique flavor. That being said, I found some recipes online and threw something together- which pleasantly took no more than fifteen minutes. Although all the recipes suggested the use of white sugar, I went for the lesser evil and substituted that for coconut sugar, which is what gave them that uncustomary off-white color.

After stirring the rice for a few minutes and allowing it to cool, I left it covered to finish the cooling process, and to my joyous pleasure, it was perfect by the time I came around to mold the rice balls. I hadn't looked at any videos to find the most efficient molding techniques, but it was easy enough to figure out and I got a good rhythm going.

These rice balls, dipped in a bit of homemade spicy veganaise, are a slice of heaven.

Those rice-balls look very delicious. What is vegannaise?

Omg, they were SO GOOD. Veganaise (I misspelled it) is a vegan alternative to mayonnaise. The ingredients listed on the jar are: Expeller-pressed High-Oliec Safflower Oil, Filtered Water, Brown Rice Syrup, Apple Cider Vinegar, Pea Protein, Sea Salt, Mustard Flour, Lemon juice Concentrate. To make the vegan "spicy mayo", I added to this veganaise some garlic powder, smoke paprika, cayenne, chili powder, ketchup, and lemon juice.

all you need is a side of octopus sausages and you done ^^

you look like a very good chief,
also wanted to try these after always seeing them in anime,
is it very sweet/ does it require a lot of sugar??

They're sweet, but it's not really a lot of sugar, just like a couple spoons. The sugar is meant to balance the vinegar flavor (my favorite component yummmm).

ow cool cl, cheers for the heads up, yeah vinegar is alright, I have got used to it from using apple cider vinegar ah

I always wanted to try onigiris. So jealous right now. Mouth watering 😥

Oishii!!! Otsukaresamadeshita =D It is part of my dream one day to go on picnics in Japan during the Cherry Blossom season and eat homemade Japanese food like this lol

The dream! Oishii!

Arigatou Elle!

I love anime and I love Vegan Onigiri too, thank You for sharing!

Hmmm, this looks really tasty. I personally don't like sushi, but I would really try it.

Yeah, it's just rice, afterall. Super delicious. They can often be made with a filling, but I made mine plain. The wrapper is seaweed, so I don't know how you feel about that lol but love that sea flavor.

Mmm They look delicious. I have tried making sushi at home recently, and they turned out not too bad. This may be my new adventure.

The ingredients for sushi rice are available anywhere online. I did a quick Google search, and found that the ingredients were short grain rice, water, rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and oil.
