It's a Samgyupsal and Chadolbaegi Date Made Cheaper and Even Better

in food •  7 years ago

I am a Korean drama addict. I can watch them all day long and so I was able to adapt their words, actions and most especially their food. I'm literally drooling whenever I watch them eat as they make it look like their food is really delicious.

One thing that I really liked about Korean food is their Samgyupsal and Kimchi. When they are dining out, they usually go to restaurants serving unlimited meat that they would need to grill themselves. Filipinos got fond of it and so restaurants serving unli-samgyupsal boomed here in the country.

So what is Samgyupsal and Chadolbaegi?

These are basically Korean barbeques. Samgyupsal is a pork belly that is either thinly or thickly sliced and then grilled without marinating involved while as chadolbaegi is a thinly sliced beef brisket. They are usually served with lettuce, kimchi and other side dishes such as steamed egg, sliced fish cake, turnip and a lot more.

Kimchi is a staple Korean side dish. This is most commonly made with cabbage, radish or cucumber that is fermented and then added with some seasonings including salt and chili powder. The taste is a combination of sour and spicy. You can pair this with almost everything. I didnt like it when I first tried it but eventually, I grew to love it.

Sesame Oil, Kimchi and Samjang

Diners would normally grill the meat with onions and garlic, put some sesame oil and then eat it with the side dishes. They would wrap the meat inside the lettuce together with kimchi, other side dishes and samjang which is a red soybean paste. Their taste is one of each kind but when eaten together, they complement each other and produce an even better taste.

Availing this unli samgyupsal in some of the restaurants here will normally range from 299-399 pesos with unli side dishes as well. You just need to add 100 if you also want an unli beef meat. I am a beef lover so I always pay around 400-500 pesos just to satisfy my cravings.

To be able to save up money while still being able to eat korean bbqs as often as I want, my boyfriend and I decided to buy our own electric grill which costs us almosts P3000. We would go to the grocery and buy kilos of these meat and have them cut as thin as possible and then get some lettuce and Kimchi as well. I also bought Samjang since there is a Korean convenience store near my workplace so I get to buy authentic Korean foods.

Our Samgyupsal date setup at their garden

I think we spent 500-600 in total (not including the grill) and this is already good for 3 people. This is much cheaper than dining at a restaurant and doing this at home is really fun. We just need to set up the table at their garden.

What could be the best way to end our samgyupsal dining experience? Have a Korean icecream for the dessert! 😁

Now my mouth is watering. Lemme try these foods soon. I haven't tried Korean dishes but Japanese. It was good that you picked the garden of your bf on your date than dinning out in resto. Both of you are practical.

I love Japanese foods too - Ramen, Tonkatsu, beef misono and the likes ☺️

Kabayan what a brilliant way to save and still get to enjoy food you like. We also are trying to limit our dine outs. My wife is quite a cook, and she tries cooking food we liked in our dine outs.

Lucky you for having a wife who knows how to cook. Haha dining out can be really expensive so it's nice to find alternatives.

I've tried Samgyupsal way back in Baguio and it's sooooooooooo good! Your bf must have had a good time with you grillin ;)
