My memory of Morel Mushrooms

in food •  7 years ago

I lived in central Indiana for 40 years. When I got to 40 years old I was interested in fishing, hunting, and lots of other outdoor activities! I can remember the mushroom hunting around the last week in April every year. We would go out and search for Morel Mushrooms. We were only searching for Morels because they have a unique form and there are no poisonous mushrooms that look like them. (We weren't mushroom experts) We also desired Morels since their taste and texture was at least 3 times better than any other mushroom I've ever had. (I've eaten mushrooms all over the world)
In my area we would usually search 30 yds either side of a creek through the woods. I really good day would yield a paper grocery sack of mushrooms - a bonanza!!!
I remember once I hadn't been lucky in finding any and was on my way home on a small farm road. A young local kid was walking down the road carrying a paper sack. I stopped and talked to him. His sack was filled with Morels he had found. He sold me the whole sack for $3.00. (nowdays that many Morels would cost $200+
We tried different cooking methods but my favorite was the simplest; slice them lengthwise and saute in butter. serve with scrambled eggs.
The memories of those haunt me!

I'm still in Indiana, and I have many fond memories of mushroom hunting with my Dad, when I was a kid! He used to be able to see them very well, until his eyesight began to taper off.

They are very good in scrambled eggs! :D I did a small electrical job for a guy I met on a shutdown last year. I hooked up his girlfriend's tanning bed, and this year he compensated me with about a pound of Morels. YUMMM!
