Making Apple Chips - You can do this yourself!

in food •  7 years ago

Greetings steemit friends,

I spent some time indoors due to the inclement weather we've had lately, so I took the time and made some apple chips. This is an easy thing you can do with your dehydrator and is a very healthy and tasty snack.

I picked up a bag of Gala apples from the grocery store for this adventure. I got out my dehydrator:

The first step after washing the apples, is to core them and make slices. I used my apple corer for this.

I used my food mandolin slicer to slice the apples to a consistent and thin chips. When using the mandolin, please keep in mind that you definitely should use the food holder. This is a very sharp instrument and will take off your fingers in a heart beat.

Next as I went, I arranged the slices on a tray.

Once the tray was full, I sprinkled some cinnamon on the apples.

Rinse and repeat, I did this until I was out of apples. I filled many trays. Then I turned on the dehydrator and let dehydrate for 3 days. They may have been done before this, but I like to make sure all the moisture is gone.

I then started filling mason jars. I used half pint jars, which are the right size for a snack.

Just like when I did my black eyed peas earlier in the season, I used my vacuum sealer and the jar attachment. As a safety warning, this vacuum sealer jar attachment is only safe to use on dry goods. Please follow proper precautions when storing food. This is safe to use on these apple chips because they are definitely dry and devoid of moisture because I dehydrated them for so long.

And there you go, I put up some apple chips, which are a very healthy and tasty snack!

There is nothing quite as satisfying to me as learning how to properly and safely put up food. I hope you do the same thing!

That looks tasty, how long will they keep in storage I would think a long time?

They will keep for months and when the lid is unsealed, the chips are just as good as when they went in the jar. It's amazing how well the vacuum sealer works.

Awesome. I can almost taste them. This weather has been a mess. Glad to finally see a thaw.

Me too, we have been cooped up for a while, I was glad to get out the last couple of days. We go 11 inches at my place... quite unusual.

That’s what I measured too.

That is very neat I like the smaller jars for single use very neat.

Thanks!!
