Garden Hack........Turn those GREEN Tomatoes to Brilliant RED in under a week. Works Everytime!

in food •  7 years ago

Morning Folks! With yet another rainy day ahead, I took a stroll through my garden, and winced at the sight, of my Green (a lovely shade of green) of my tomatoes. I am not really a patient kinda lady and do not want to risk my tomatoes going to rot while I am waiting for them to turn red. So what is a lady to do? I have just the solution. Follow me to see how.

Green Tomatoes

Here is the solution. Just wrap your tomatoes in newspaper and place in a cold dry spot for 5-6 days. They will turn red and ready to eat or stew or do whatever it is you want to do with them.

Hope this helps you all get a grip on your garden after a month of rain.

Happy Trails

Thanks for sharing.

I have been growing tomatoes for years, I have never heard of this, I am going to have to give it a try! Thanks for the information.

True story. Sometimes depending on the size it may take a day or 2 longer.

My grandmother is doing the same thing for years is working very well

Wow...I have never seen this before! Something I will have to try, thanks for the tip!!!

True Story, depending on the size it may take a day or 2 longer but usually within a week.

Even if it take a few days longer its worth given this a try, because there is nothing more frustrating then seeing a nice red tomato just to pick it and see that something has started eating it!

But, I want to wait until my tomato is the size of a softball!! ;)

Thanks for the tip.

Oh and you can, but for us unlucky people in Ontario, I have loads of Green tomatoes that are the size of a softball, but wont turn green because the sun just wont shine long enough. It has rained for a month here.

Well, there is that.
My Red October Surprise tomato is only the size of a baseball right now. I don't think it is supposed to get the size of a softball. But, I did notice it is starting to change colors. My Romas, however, seem to be about twice the size of regular Romas and are still green.

Well you should give this a try. I find tomatoes that stay green longer tend to get hard and kinda woody. So I do this and all is grand in the world of Gardening.

I'll have to figure out what a substitute for newspaper is. LOL

brown paper bags, the ones that you put leaves and yard waste in, you could just put them in a brown cardboard box with a lid and store in dark cool place that would work also. NO LIGHT is the idea

Well, I do have the cardboard box.
We put leaves and yard waste in clear bags for the yard waste trucks to pickup.

Of course, lately, I've just been collecting it in a barrel and then trying to suffocate the wilds of my backyard beyond the fence.

Before the first Frost, I like pulling the rest of my green tomatoes off the plant and set them on my countertop. They ripen slowly over time and I get fresh tomatoes all the way into December.

Really great tip for folks who live in those parts of the world with shorter summers.

lol this is great.. i will try this tommorow.

plenty of sun here, but i just have to try this

never heard of it before . thanks in advance!

You are so lucky, beautiful tomatoes, and nice perfect size, for a salad for 2. LOL, this really works, farmers in our country have been doing this for years. Depending on the size it may take a day or 2 longer but usually within a week

1st round is wrapped and waiting already. is it allowed to unwrap them and see the progress? i will post it when its done. but i like green ones too, we preserve them just like a pickles, and it has really unique taste

Yes of course you can unwrap and check the status. Good luck. Looking forward to your results.

took a bit longer, but its done and it works

ive lost 2 of 3 tomatoes, and almost forgot about it, but dramatic change started just 4,5 days ago

I'll have to try. My plants are withering and drying up in the hot sun but the tomatoes are still green.

depending on the size, may take a day or 2 longer, but usually withing a week

I love it, we do this in the fall for the last of the tomatoes that haven't quite made it to maturity. I love growing tomatoes every year to make Sauce for the winter.

Does it change the taste at all?

No not at all. Thank you
