The torrejas are an exquisite dish made from wheat flour and sugar. As usual; snack is eaten to sweeten afternoons.

Although it is a dessert inherited from the European continent; the Venezuelan version has become a tradition of fascinating flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of wheat flour (which you can replace with soy flour or cassava flour).
-Sugar (which you can replace with honey or paper).
  • Half (Β½) teaspoon of salt.
  • Half (Β½) teaspoon of baking powder.
  • 3 tablespoons of melted butter (which can be substituted with margarine or vegetable oils).
  • 1 egg and cold water (approximately between Β½ and ΒΎ cup).

Preparation

First you must sift the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder and place everything in a bowl, then add the butter and mix. Afterwards, the egg should be beaten a little to add it to the mixture.

The result will be a consistent mass, to which you must add the cold water little by little until you notice that it becomes smooth. If you get to use all the water and still feel the mixture hard, you can use a little more.

Then remove the mixture and knead it for a few minutes until it is flexible. Let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes, then take the dough and cut it with your hands to form small balls that will be stretched from the edges (without crushing the central part), as if you wanted to make arepas. Once this process is finished the torreja is ready to fry or you can also opt for a healthier alternative and roast it.

Finally you will have your torrejas ready to enjoy alone or accompanied by some other ingredient that serves to decorate it above; as for example sugar.
