Our Review
I've never had a chili with pumpkin and apples in it. To make it even more exotic, it has cocoa powder along with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice! It's like hot chocolate/pumpkin spice chili. And when I say chili, I mean chili, since it also has garlic, peppers, chili powder, jalapenos, rosemary and thyme.

1 medium onion, diced
1 medium bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced
2 cups fresh pumpkin, peeled and cut into small cubes*
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
1 cup tomato paste
1 cup tomato sauce
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
3 cups water, plus a little more as needed
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons liquid smoke
2 tablespoons sriracha (optional)
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
3 tablespoons coconut sugar (or 2 tablespoons brown sugar)
2 cups cooked lentils, drained and rinsed
2 cans white white beans, undrained
1 can cooked black beans, drained and rinsed
1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste
Spices:
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon rosemary
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon ginger
1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
Optional Toppings:
roasted pepitas
chives or green onions
coconut yogurt
What?
It's like chili meets pumpkin spice. Does it work? At first no, we made a critical error. We forgot an ingredient and learned a valuable lesson. All the savory chili ingredients and sweet pumpkin spice ingredients didn't match well - it was a strange combination. First bite was a little off-putting but not bad. Second bite was better. Third bite somewhat enjoyable, but something was missing.
We were missing the spice that links savory and sweet.
We looked at the ingredients list again and noticed cumin. We forgot to include cumin!
Once we sprinkled a little cumin into our dish a wonderful transformation happened right before us. It suddenly became a perfect, delicious savory/sweet dish that we gobbled up.
And I didn't even miss the Meat!
Chili with a lot of spices in it, is quite an experience for the taste buds. It has three types of beans (white, black and lentil), pumpkin and apple, lots of different spices, topped with sour cream. Absolutely delicious.
The spices make it so it tricks the pallet into thinking there is meat in this dish, but it's completely vegetarian. Would I give up meat for this dish? Nope. But I really enjoyed it and if I could eat this kind of food all the time I wouldn't miss the meat at all.
If you can gather all these ingredients, make this dish. You won't regret it!
Just don't forget the cumin!

Last Sabbath a couple of people brought chilli, I tried them both and they were in my opinion both bad. I guess I am a purest in that I just want my chilli to taste like chilli.
