Dairy-Free Junk Food

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)

About two weeks ago, I found myself in town with a craving for sweets. Unfortunately, my dairy allergy precludes indulging in the average array of baked goods, so I stopped in at a small health food store and decided to splurge. I set aside the wrappers to remind myself to post about them, but life got away from me. They turned up again though, and here we are!

Joyva Halvah Marble Bar

This bar contains chocolate, but apparently includes no milk products. Yay! There are 12 grams of sugars per 49 gram bar, so it's not best for frequent consumption.

This bar is made from a sesame seed base rather than flour, so it is also a gluten-free product. And if you have religious dietary concerns, it's also kosher. This product does contain egg, so it is certainly not vegan. I don't care, but some of you might.

It was a bit dry and crumbly, but I think that's how it's supposed to be. I enjoyed it, and would consider buying it again when my junk food urge needs to be addressed. Their company website is a bit sparse, so check out the image credit link for an online store that carries it, or just buy through Amazon, if you don't have a local brick-and-mortar health food store that stocks it.

Frankly Natural Bakers Rainforest Cookie

This "Wheat-Free Energy Cookie" is vegan product with no dairy or egg. It is made with barley, so like rye, it is not safe for those with a gluten intolerance. It also includes oats, sesame, brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds.

I was rather less impressed with this cookie. It seemed to have a slightly bitter taste. Perhaps this is just due to only having 8 grams of sugar in a 60-gram nut-based cookie, but I remain unimpressed. I'd give this one a pass in the future.

Alternative Baking Company Cocaroon

I don't see this cookie on their website at the time of this posting, so this "Cookie of the Season" may be out of season now, but it is definitely recommended. This is a 120 gram cookie with 28 grams of sugar per cookie. They try cheat by claiming it's "two servings" with 14 grams each. HA! Still, that puts it somewhere in between the previous products in sugar-to-mass ratio.

This is another vegan product, so no milk or eggs. Unlike the previous cookie, this one still tastes like a proper COOKIE. This gets another enthusiastic recommendation, and if you can't find this specific variety, it's probably safe to say the rest are likely equally good.

I love halvah! There's a Ukrainian store in Washington that has it!
