Kepong Markets – Tuesday Night Market

in food •  6 years ago

Markets have been part of our daily routines for a long time. Despite the rapid changes and modernization happening every day, markets are still a popular trend among people of all ages. I believe this is mostly due to the abundant variety of choices and low prices. Not to mention the fact that markets provide fresher and more worth buying goods than all the supermarkets that are opening up more and more these days. There is also something about these markets that count as “hanging out” for the younger generation too.

Personally, I like going to night markets. Despite the repetitive types of food or vendors, I still like to make it a point to visit every night market I know of that is of reasonable distance from my home. The experience excites me, and almost every type of food sold there are DELICIOUS even though super unhealthy. Let’s not forget the ever rising prices due to inflation as well. Night market food these days are not as affordable as it was compared to regular hawker stall food anymore, but it is still an on-going trend to-date.

One of my regular go-to night markets is the Tuesday night market in Kepong. This is a rather short night market focused on food rather than clothing and gadgets which I prefer. This night market usually starts being set up as early as 5.30pm but, I usually pay a visit at about 6.30pm to give all the vendors time to fully open.
My favourite appetizer would have to be the yam cake, costing RM4.00.

The single portion is usually enough for a one pax dinner, but it is rather filling and will lose its appeal if you eat too much so I suggest this for sharing. However, the vendor’s yam cake is usually sold out by 6.00PM. I would recommend going to the night market early if you would like to try this. The owners are also very nice people who do not add additional charges if you ask for extra sauce. I like their yam cake as the taste is not too strong nor is the yam cake too dry. The sauce on the other hand is just the right amount of saltiness and thickness.
There is also the fried carrot cake uncle that has been doing business in this night market since I was born. His carrot cake costs RM6 for a small pack and RM7 for the big.

Unfortunately, I find that his cooking skills have deteriorated over the years and his carrot cake is not as good as it used to be. The carrot cake tastes pretty bland, and all you can taste is the spiciness if you opt for the chilli. Everything else about it is just the standard fried carrot cake ingredients that do not help much to bring out the best in the dish. However, he is the only store there if you have cravings for it.
And then there’s my ultimate favourite, the fruit rojak, costing RM6 for a small pack and RM7 for the big one.

The thing I love most about it is the thick nutty sauce he uses to blend all the ingredients in. The ingredients he used are mainly mango, papaya, “kangkung”, bean sprouts, “yau char guai” and crackers. The sauce is a perfect combination of sweet and salty that compliments the ingredients used very well. The downside is that he does not allow for swapping out of the set ingredients so, that’s a bummer. All in all, this night market is worth a visit. Do try to pay a visit !

This surely reminds me the good old days when I visited night markets weekly just for a different taste of dinner; especially the fried radish (white carrot) cake.
But I must say I think the taste deterioration seems to be standardised over this dish even though my regular place is at SS2. The Taman Megah stall could still keep it up but probably because he has to cook non stop his mood sometimes defers.

I haven't have rojak for a while now simply because it is getting more and more expensive for local fruit salad; but never the less it is always great to have it once a blue moon.

(Steam yam cake I'd just get it from the normal wet market haha)
