Onion: Placing your onions inside your refrigerator will eventually end up turning them moldy and soft. According to the National Onion Association in the U.S, unpeeled onions should be kept out of plastic bags and fridge. One of the reasons for this is because unpeeled onions require and need air exposure for maximum life. If you have peeled an onion though, then you should keep it in the fridge, in a covered container.
Garlic: placing garlic in your refrigerator will actually cause it to sprout. The garlic will also get moldy and even rubbery. Moreover, inside your fridge, the look of the garlic will rarely change. This means you won’t be able to tell if it’s any good until you finally slice it open.
Cheese is a product that has gone through a controlled spoilage of milk. "Very firm cheeses, such as Parmesan, can be kept out of the fridge for weeks - their life span just wont be quite as long."
If you do want to keep your cheese in the fridge, keep it in the warmest spot, like the vegetable drawer. A too-cold spot will keep the cheese from breathing.

I'm going to need some explanations on why it's bad to store these in the fridge.
I'm guilty of putting onions, garlic, and cheese in my fridge, but they always seem fine. What's the issue?

tomatoes: the cold damages their skin and makes it easier for molds to invade. Thus they get moldy.
I didn't know about onions, garlic and cheese too btw., I always have them in the fridge. Will have to reconsider^^
good post @junkfood! You could use the "steemit-education" tag for that.
