In California, vegan meals soon served for patients and inmates

The Senate of the State of California (United States) has just passed a landmark bill that aims to introduce vegan meals for hospitalized people and prisoners.

While the French government and parliament have just voted against the introduction of a vegetarian meal in school canteens , the US state of California, already known for its many courageous commitments to the environment has approved to the unanimously a bill calling for plant-based meals for inpatients and inmates.

Bill 1138 , introduced by Senator Nancy Skinner and sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, requires licensed California health facilities and state prisons to offer vegan options. that is, without meat (which includes poultry and cold cuts), fish, eggs and dairy products.

Legislators have made this enlightened decision because it has a triple interest. She permits :

to improve public health, recommendations already made by the American Medical Association in June 2017 and the American College of Cardiology;
to save public money directly: meat is expensive, and indirectly by avoiding diseases linked to meat consumption : obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, cancers ...;
reduce environmental impact while livestock is now clearly identified as the main cause of deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. 

" Providing herbal meal options is a great way to give people healthy choices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food, " said Senator Skinner. " But most importantly, I want to make sure that we are fair and that we provide people in institutional settings with food options that meet their individual needs ." Indeed, if this bill has been passed it is also and perhaps most importantly because it answers religious questions and personal choices about food. The vegan meal has the interest of really satisfying everyone.

Note that in France, in hospitals, it is quite possible to ask for meals without products of animal origin, but then we are only served vegetables (usually in larger quantities), so it is not no vegan option.
