When your basil starts getting old and tough and going to seed, harvest the stems and leaves to make basil-infused olive oil.
@Drutter and I put our homegeown basil in a glass jar with organic olive oil and let it sit on the stove top for about an hour while the oven was at 400 degrees (and therefore nice and hot on the outside).
After removing it from heat we let it sit overnight at room temperature. The next morning we removed the basil with a clean utensil.
Voilà, basil-infused olive oil! It stores best in a glass jar kept out of the light. This was fun and easy, so I want to try other infusions in the future like oregano, cannabis, etc. This is a delicious way to start a pizza or marinara when you can't use fresh basil.
Nutritious, easy-to-grow basil, and olive oil are key components in a a Mediterranean diet shown to prevent cancer and heart disease - the biggest killers. Olive oil is also good skin care with natural SPF to protect against cancer and ageing. I suggest using (infused) olive or coconut oil in replace of skin moisturizer or light SPF. It's no wonder they are both seen as sacred to many cultures.
