From Chef Derek:

"When I first arrived in Britain from America I was hugely surprised at how little choice there was for vegans and those considering a lifestyle change. For too long, vegans have been overlooked, with many offerings that are available seemingly created to appease rather than truly please. Wicked Kitchen plans to change all that and I’m proud to work with Tesco and offer all its customers delicious meals to get them on board with this growing foodie revolution."

I personally love the fact that they have been so inventive with mushrooms.

In a press release from tesco they state:

"Tesco has partnered with pioneering chef, Derek Sarno, to create ‘Wicked Kitchen’ – a new range of irresistible meals that celebrate everything that’s ‘wicked’ and tasty about plants.

Recently demand for vegetarian and vegan food has soared as a result of lifestyle choices such as Meat Free Mondays and flexitarian diets. In the last year alone, Tesco has directly seen the effect of those lifestyle choices with demand for chilled vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes soaring by 25 per cent.

Prepared exclusively for Tesco, the new range will launch on 8 January in 600 stores nationwide.

From crispy carrot ‘pastrami’ to wicked-meaty barbecued ‘shrooms and Sourdough Pizza, the vibrant wraps, meals and salads have all the zing, punch and crunch to encourage Brits to eat more veg – and they’re available at a great price too."

I really have to say hats off to Tesco, they have really been pushing their plant based meals and alternatives with plant based recipes listed on their own website and facebook channels too! Now obviously they are a business and the growth of Veganism in the last few years is a clear gap in the market that they will now exploit, but hey, I'm not going to complain, after all everyone of these meals / products that are bought are one less meal that contains an inocent animal!

Oh and did you know that tescos own brand cosmetics and personal care items are not tested on animals?

Here is their statement on animal testing...

‘We do not support testing on animals for cosmetic or household products, and do not carry out or commission such tests on our own-brand products or the ingredients they contain. Some products have ingredients which will have been tested on animals in the past. This is because we operate a fixed cut-off date for animal testing of ingredients, of 31 December 2007. We have set in place very robust systems to ensure that these cut-off dates have been met by all our suppliers to our own brand, where stipulated.’

There's always going to be fighting for the big money, but at least with all of the demand for vegan food the poor animals won't be caught in the middle as they usually are. ;) I try to make as much of my food at home as possible, but I have to say it is nice to have some options on the occasion when I need a quick meal out. Plus if they do a good job it will encourage more people to ditch the meat and dairy!

💯I totally agree. Money talks, I love batch making too. I typically spend a few hours on a sunday making lunches, salads and when Mammybot is working we make dinners for a few days too. The kids go to school with home made lunches everyday, with a little treat on Fridays.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to reply.

My mom always made us lunches as kids, too! Not quite as healthy as how I cook now, but I think it still set the tone for my adult life. :)

Totally agree, I think that a lot of people just don't take the time to do the simple stuff. It takes maybe 10 mins to make our kids lunch on a daily basis. Some of the kids eat in the chipper or deli. Some don't even have breakfast before they arrive at the school. I just cant understand it.

I dont like the way the big corporations have a stranglehold over the food industry, Tescos have only started to supply this because of buyer demand, they weren't at all interested in the welfare of animals before, and they are hypocrites saying they dont condone animal testing yet have a big meat section in their stores!

However in saying all that of course this is good news for the movement and for the animals, just grates how they smoozy up to consumers! Just shows though that the biggest changes we can make are with our pound notes! Good article and upvoted.

💯Money talks and in this scenario consumer desire is leaning towards plant based alternatives. I don't for one second think that tesco are doing this for their love of animals, the environment or their consumers health. I do think that encouragement and spreading the word that there are delicious alternatives available will be the way that people move away from the old ways.

Agreed on meat sections, only recently I saw a post on insta with a tesco store closing their meat counters due to low demand! Now that is real people power. I am going to start a mailing campaign to our health minister here to have meat products labelled as probable carcinogenic substances and processed meats as class1 just like tobacco!

Oh, also to say, lots of people (non Vegan) think that Vegan or cruelty free brands need to be expensive. If we can show own brand products that are typically the cheaper option can be cruelty free, this may be enough to move away from the Unilevers of this world etc. Take Astonish, all Vegan labelled, cruelty free and cheap as chips, yet people still go out and spent more on pamolive etc.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Can’t wait to have something like Tescos have released, here. But you’re right, it is a revolution and we’re on the upward swing 👍🏼

Thanks for reading and your reply. When people see that we don't just eat lettuce etc I think that people will take the alternative. There is a definitive shift happening in the food market at the moment. I think it needs all the encouragement it can get.

And being vegan makes you so much more creative with food. It's like being a food detective!

Totally true, although I think if more and more of these keep coming out we might just all start getting lazy!

I looove wickedhealthy cant wait for them to come to Ireland
