Making Homemade Vinegar From Wine or Juice

in food •  8 years ago

Making vinegar is easy! Super easy actually, so easy that you shouldn't pay for it. Premium vinegars are very expensive, and you can make great quality vinegars right at home.
Vinegars are great for marinading meat, tossing on salads, making salad dressings, pickling garden surplus, and some vinegars even pair with fruit!

Vinegar is the result of bacteria breaking down sugar. This aerobic bacteria called acetobacter bacteria takes the tasty sugars and makes vinegar or acetic acid.

You are probably familiar with Bragg's Apple Cider vinegar, made from fresh organic apples. In unfiltered vinegars, like Bragg's, you will have whats called a "mother." The Mother is the bacteria that settles to the bottom of a batch. This Bacteria can be re-used to start a new batch of vinegar.

To make a new batch of vinegar, you will need;

  1. Juice or wine

  2. a "mother"
    if you don't have mother, you can always buy vinegar with the "mother" still in it. example-

  3. a wide mouth jar or container - i recommend this be glass or ceramic
    Crock for example. I love to snag these at yard sales.

  4. cloth or clean rag

  5. a rubber band or string to tie off the fabric

  6. bottles to bottle the vinegar into.
    Woozy bottles that I Love!

After mixing your ingredients this will need to sit for 3-4 weeks.
