Recently, Burger King announced their new menu item, the 'Whopperito'. So when my girlfriend asked for something to eat, I decided to use that as an inspiration and make a Greek version of a burrito. The recipe is very simple and it can literally be done in 20-30 minutes.
What you will need (for 1 burrito):
- 200g (7 oz) of chicken breast or thigh (boneless)
- 1 Burrito tortilla
- Gyro spice mix (paprika, thyme, dry basil, oregano, salt, pepper, garlic powder, rosemary)
- Olive oil
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Onion
- Tzatziki (greek yogurt with grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and mint)
- Potato slices (or french fries)
Before we start, I have to make 2 comments. First, in my recipe I used turkey breast because that's what I had available. I don't suggest doing that. Use a more fatty meat, with boneless chicken thigh being the best option. Second, since this was made for my girlfriend, she requested to have mustard in her Gyro-rito. I would strongly advise you against it and therefore I have not included it in the ingredient list.
1. Prepare the meat. Cut it in small stripes. The turkey breast I used in my burrito, was marinated in paprika and yogurt, hence the color.
2. Add your spices, a little bit of olive oil and mix well. You can leave the meat to marinate for a few hours if you want.
3. Before you cook the meat, you need to start cooking your potatoes. In my case, I used frozen potato slices which I baked in the oven with olive oil at 200 celcius (390 farenheit) for about 15-20 minutes.
4. To cook the meat, preheat your pan on high heat. Add a little bit of olive oil and cook a small portion of the meat. Don't overcrowd your pan or else the temperature will drop and you will end up boiling the meat. If you are making more than 1 burrito and you need to cook the meat in batches, just wipe the pan clean in between, add olive oil again and repeat.
5. Assemble your Gyro-rito! First add the salad, the potatoes the meat and finally the tzatziki. As I said earlier, I don't suggest adding the mustard.
6. Fold your Gyro-rito
7. Cut in half and serve with some french fries! :)

If you want to learn how to make tzatziki, here is a really bad video I made almost 5 years ago:

I enjoyed your post and it does look great. But it is not the greek traditional gyro.it is more like what americans think gyro is.
it is similar but the difference is in the details

You are absolutely right!! This is far from the traditional gyro. There is no greek pitta in this one, but most importantly the meat....It can never be as delicious when you cook it in a pan. But I had to put something together with what I had at home :)
