Although watermelons are tasting sweet, they belong to the family of pumpkins. So actually they are a vegetable.

Look for yellow stains

Yellow spots mark the point at which the watermelon grew on the ground. Ripe watermelons have always a yellowish stain, no white.

Look for the "Net"

The nets mean that bees pollinated the watermelons flowers. 

"Male" and "Female" Watermelons

Many do not know that farmers separate watermelons in "Male" and "Female". The male have an elongated shape and are larger and containsmore water, while the female are small, round and sweet.

Pay attention to the weight

You should not search for the longest or the  smallest. Pick a good one with a good size. However, no matter how big it is, it should have an appropriate weight for their size.

Dry inflorescence stems mean that watermelons are ripe. If they are green, this means that the watermelon was harvested too early.
