MEXICAN STREET FOOD - LONCHES

in food •  7 years ago

This is my favorite street food from down in Mexico!

Ever since I first crossed the border into Mexico to eat lunch, the lonches have been my favorite. These are so tasty that we even try to make them ourselves, but they are never as good as the authentic ones. On our last trip, I went to Mexico three times, and three times I bought some lonches. Once, I even brought four orders back across the border to share with my friends in America!

BASIC RECIPE

After @mama-pepper and I had our fifth child just a couple of months ago, I made these for her while @grandpa-pepper and my mom were in town. I made a full recipe post then (POST LINKED HERE), but here are the basics.

Heat up some cooking oil.

Fry your bread (bolillos) in it like you would a doughnut.

Cook some ground beef or steak, slice the bread, and fill it with the cooked meat.

Add shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and sliced avacados.

Serve with fried onions, salsa, and limes.

Admire the amazing edible creation!

INEXPENSIVE AND INCREDIBLE!

A plate of five lonches will often cost me about $4 USD. Of course I give them extra because it is worth it, but still… $4?

Not everyone feels comfortable having someone prepare them a meal on the street in another country and touching the food that you will be eating with their bare hands, but this is their job and livelihood. I’ve never had an issue yet, other than eating a lot of lonches!

Lonches are also great with elotes, which are another Mexican Street Food that we really enjoy and have been eating for years.

The @little-peppers really like eating them as well. Just ask Pinkie-Pepper or Sweet-Pepper about that.

Also, the Luchador Batman enjoys them for lunch too.

UNTIL NEXT TIME…

With deliciousness like this pouring off of the plate, I think that the lonches will always be my favorite Mexican street food. While making this post Pinkie-Pepper mentioned how delicious they were and @mama-pepper wanted to jump back in the truck and drive back down to Mexico. We will have to wait a few months until we have to go back, but at least we have the memories.

As it turns out, there is a good chance that we may actually end up eating these for breakfast, lunch, and dinner next time we head down. (Special request from @mama-pepper)

Have any of you ever tried these? Would you like to?

I will be in Mexico soon. I will try a "proof of lonches" for myself!

Good idea. Back to Acapulco?

Not sure where all they have these, but they may be a border-town special to appeal to the gringos. A "torta" should be pretty close, but may be on a larger, round bread. I consider them to be the "whopper" of Mexican food, like if Burger King got married to Taco Bell and they had a kid.

Not Acapulco, Baja.

Cool, never been. I've done Acapulco, but not yet for Baja.

wow, look like very delicious!

looks tasty

they look so delicious

I love authentic Mexican food. Can't beat it. It is so much better across the border because it is not bastardized like it is here in the United States. Food looks very yummy.

Authentic Mexican street food is the best and usually pretty healthy.

i think only one thing is missing there............

and that is wine. lol

Nice post.

Looks very appetizing. I have however never tasted it, think I must travel to Mexico and do so immediately!

I have never heard of these but they look absolutely delightful. Sorta like fluffy doughnut tacos !

These look so tasty, I have never heard of them :)

That batman mask though! So much cuteness and deliciousness in one place. Much approval from me!

I can't control my mouth-waters! Everything seems delicious

Wow! I grew up in Phoenix, I now live 15 minutes from the border, been to mexico a hand full of times. I have never heard of these. I must try them...

You truly must. They have them on the Atlantic (Gulf) side, hopefully they have them over there too!

Looks really tasty. I won't mind a bite.

Nice! thanks for sharing dear friend :)

Thank you for checking it out.

Welcome :)

Here in Mexico City lonches are called tortas, and yes, so good, and 4 bucks for that whole plate is cheap even for Mexico's standards! I just posted an article on the art and science of eating a taco, if you care to check it out

I've only heard of much larger bread that is round being called "tortas."

In almost every other Spanish speaking country a torta is a cake, not in central Mexico

Very good food @ papa-pepper. I have never eaten it. But I will try to make it myself at home. Thank you very much for sharing the recipe @ papa-pepper. Hope you are always healthy and happy there

Thank you for showing us this food that looks so delicious!

I am gonna need some shipped to Michigan...

Amazing....

Looks AMAZING!!! I love street food

You always know salsa is going to be good when it comes in a bag. I could drink the stuff.

I haven't tried those before. However, they look very yummy. I'll have to try finding some the next time I go to Mexico.

wow.. these are just like hotdogs but better. haha I think I've seen an old episode of no reservations where tony bourdain eats these. Looks super delicious! wish I had couple of those right now!

I wish I had a couple right now too, but I'll have to settle for grilled cheese sandwiches with tomatoes in them....

I love a good ole grilled cheese with tomatoes, but those lonches look incredible! Time to start looking at flights to mexico!

I love, love tomatoes and never thought to put in a grilled cheese......another great recipe from @papa-pepper.

I'm going to try to make this at home. This looks amazing and my mouth is watering lol

mmmmm I'm hungry :(

How delicious everything looks, the Mexican gastronomy is very good, I have had the pleasure of trying some dishes and I have loved it!

Other than the limes, those look so yummy. Now I'm hungry and supper isn't for another 2.5 hours. :(

I might have to start it early and make extra for a late night snack. :D

Where you eat that??? I'm mexican and never seen that, and i love to try it. Sounds like a very good idea!

Border towns... Perhaps created to appeal to the gringos.

Maybe, or maybe not. I've never been at the border so i really don't know. But it look very interesting, i'd love to try it. thanks for sharing.

looks yummy

Thank you for the details. Would really try some soon :)

These look absolutely delicious! I've never thought to fry already baked breads, I use Bolillos rolls for meatball sandwiches. I'm definately going to give these lonches a try. Thanks for sharing @papa- pepper.

Why you did this to meee now i'm so hungryyyyy noww hahaha! @papa-pepper, also, I wrote a post about how we can save money in our trips, hope you can check it! https://steemit.com/travel/@maxmilan878/how-to-make-a-five-star-trip-on-a-backpacker-price i'm just trying to get to know my posts, really, I don't like the SPAM

Have a nice day!

I love Mexican food.

These look amazing! Thanks for sharing.

While some don't like street food, I actually liked alot of it from my time in South America. Anticuchos (meat kabobs), Completos(hotdog/sausage piled with tomatoes, avocado, and mayo. Some add other things as well.), and Papa Rellanas (fried potatoes balls stuffed with chicken, beef, or cheese.) were among my favorites.

¡Esos sí que son los 'hot-dogs' mexicanos! Nunca se me habría ocurrido hacerlo con bolillos, se ven súper ricos D: y dietéticos por supuesto xD

@papa-pepper when I was in Ohio, I couldn't help but think about you when I saw a $1700 bottle of hot sauce. I remember thinking that if I ever some how end up rich, I'm going to go back and get that bottle of hot sauce for you lol. Strictly for science. I want to know what the actual capacity for human spicy edibles is lol. It was allegedly like 5 times hotter than the ghost pepper hot sauce, I figured if they have to start measuring the intensity and putting warnings on the bottle that it's probably out of my skill level and more in the range of your pepper aficionado skill set.

Now that looks tasty ummm I just eaten and I’m hungry again :)

Never tried it. But I really want to taste this yummy!!=))

great post !! its so amazing.
