Dessert Charcuterie Board

Here are three things I am a big fan of:

  • Charcuterie boards
  • Game of Thrones
  • Sweets and desserts

Last night I decided to combine my love of those three things into an awesome snack tray that was probably the only thing that kept me from falling off in to a cliff of anxiety while we watched the latest episode of Game of Thrones.

Usually my snack boards lend to the savory, featuring things like hummus, strong cheese, vegetables, salted crackers and the like. But this time, I (mostly) left out those savory snacks, and included a host of sweet things.

The result was awesome. We got to indulge in various sweet snacks, without overeating any of them. We were able to sample from many sweets, instead of being limited to one. This would be a great option for entertaining, and you could even ask each guest to potluck the sweets, bringing one snackable dessert food per person for a varied dessert charcuterie board.

Or just make it on Game of Thrones night, like I did, as a treat for enduring the inevitable loss of beloved characters.

Here's what to include:

Fruits:
Whatever is in season is the best call. We used fresh strawberries and some blackberries for color contrast, but cherries, cantaloupe, apple slices and pretty much any fruit would work on the board. Just make sure the fruit is bite-sized or cut in to small pieces.

Crackers:
Leave the salty crackers in the pantry for your dessert board. Graham crackers are perfect in your dessert spread. I also included a fig and thyme cracker that worked wonderfully on the board. Pretzels are a great choice. I used peanutbutter filled pretzels on this one.

Chocolate:
An obvious choice for any dessert. Break candy bars in to bite sized pieces. Feel free to include various types of chocolate, like white, dark, and milk on the board.

Dips and Spreads:
I used nutella and cherry jam. Also acceptable for the dessert spread would be melted chocolate or a strawberry puree.

Cheeses:
Most people wouldn't think of cheese when they think of dessert, but gouda pairs amazingly with chocolate. Other cheese that work well with dessert are gruyere, marscapone, or brie.

Cookies:
An obvious choice for bite-sized dessert, cookies are a must-include in your dessert board. I used pirouette cookies, but really anything goes cookie-wise for this.

This dessert charcuterie board pairs well with a sweet white wine or rosé.

It's not often you see a dessert charcuterie board. Usually they are meat and cheese. That's a good idea though. I could do something like that.

I have been a cheese and cracker fiend ever since I was a little kid. I never really think to order boards like this (yep I didn't want to have to try and spell Charcuterie). I think part of it is because my wife isn't a big fan of the meats that you typically see on them. Myself I can enjoy a good salami etc. but most of that is wasted on her. A nice board like this might make a difference though. I live in a town that use to be a major cheese manufacturing presence. That has kind of went away, but it has left about four cheese stores which is pretty crazy for the size of the town. They have a nice variety of cheeses that you can watch them slice right off the wheel. The extra sharp is probably my favorite and hunters stop by the thousands on their way North to grab that or the squeaky mild for deer camp every year.
