In the suburbs most likely you are will have at least a small front yard or back yard that you can also work with. Those yards are typically filled with gardens of non-edible plants (particularly grass), or sometimes just rocks and bushes. What a waste of space. Instead, with a little thought and not much effort, that space can be converted into abundance and for pretty cheap.
A simple and extremely powerful example of this is a very unique design called a Raised-Bed Garden. This can be implemented and can be adapted to the size and space you have available.
I've included a link to instructions from a well known presenter who teaches his methods on YouTube on the traditional way to create your own raised-bed garden, should you choose to include these in your suburban garden design. Note: If you’re on a tight budget, the costs could be cut in half by simply planting seeds instead of splurging on seedlings, and using manure and straw or wood chips.
The presenter is John from GrowingYourGreens.com and instructions begin at 9:59 mark (if you want to skip the intro discussion). He has many subsequent highly-educational videos that demonstrate how to install automatic drip irrigation systems, how to select layout, materials, plants, seedlings, etc. (Btw I have no interest in this guy's business, but I think he's one of the best resources out there for this topic which is why I'm sharing).
Here is an example of what the finished Raised-Bed Garden can looks like:
