Gougères au Fromage (French Cheese Puffs) or How your life might change overnight

Your life might change after you try this delicious recipe.

Gougères au fromage

Prep: 25 minutes
Cook: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 25cl (1 cup) of water
  • 150g (2/3 cup) of grated cheese (ideally Gruyère, but Cheddar works too!)
  • 150g (2/3 cup) flour
  • 80g (6 tablespoons) butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly-ground black pepper

Utensils:

  • 1 oven
  • 1 pan
  • 1 cheese grater
  • 1 mixing bowl

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425F (220C).
  2. Heat the water, butter, salt, and pepper in a saucepan until the butter is melted.
  3. Dump in the flour all at once and stir vigorously until the mixture pulls away from the sides into a smooth ball. Remove from heat.
  4. Scrape the dough into a mixing bowl.
  5. Add the eggs one by one while stirring quickly.
  6. Add about 3/4s of the grated cheese, and stir until well-mixed.
  7. Using two teaspoons, put the dough into mounds, evenly-spaced apart, making each about the size of a small cherry tomato on a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Top each puff with a bit of the remaining cheese.
  9. Put the baking sheet in the oven.
  10. Bake for 25 minutes or until they are completely golden brown.
  11. Savour it!
