Lemongrass is one of those herbs that reminds me of home. It has a wonderful lemony scent that not quite the lemon. Its popularly used in East and Southeast asian cuisine. It's a perennial plant, which is easy to grow in your garden or a pot. Lemongrass essential oil can be a wonderfully calming and often used in aromatherapy. It can be easily found in your local Asian market or natural food store. It can stored for a long time frozen.
One of my favorite ways of using lemongrass is to steep it in water to make tea. Its wonderfully citusy and this herbal tea is perfect for a cold winter afternoon with some shortbread cookies!
Lemongrass tea
4 cups water
2 cups roughly chopped lemongrass stalks
The base of the lemongrass, which is light yellow with hints of purple on the inside, has the most flavor. You can discard the leaves of the stalk.
Boil water until it comes to a rolling boil. Add the roughly chopped lemongrass stalks and continue to boil for 5 minutes. Turn of the heat and let it steep for an additional 5 minutes.
Bonus tip: You can have it as is on a cold day or add ice, honey and lemon-lime soda for a warm day! Slices of lemon and mint can be optional garnishes!
