You want to eat something you know is reliably tasty and that you have a good inkling of the taste for. You don't want to end up with something you regret ordering as you will likely have to go back to ordering something you know and end up wasting a lot of food / money.

This is not a behaviour that happens uniquely in restaurants. It's just something we learned or acquired overtime as adults in making safer decisions to reduce "risk."That said, what is the risk in ordering something unfamiliar to eat?
