Food is free project on going. cooperation proven.

When I first had this idea, it was met with derision.

My neighbours thought I was a crazy foreigner, and heck they may be correct. You see I had all this spare land, that regardless of use, the government wants tax for it, what better use then than growing food to give away, and added bonus, getting some money from the government for using the land, win win.

Even with these positive gains, some people still thought I was a little crazy for not wanting to farm the land for profit. You see all I am is a big city boy in truth, the little I know about farming I could write (as stated before) on a postage stamp, and still have room to lick it and use it to post a letter.

A local farmer who supplies me with free grass mowing creatures every year, he calls them cows, decided he would help me by being my man in a tractor to plough the fields and seed them, he went one step further by getting another farmer to agree that when the time comes, he will harvest it for us.

He also talked to a company that has offered to separate the useful parts from the roots/stems etc, now you can see my lack of farming knowledge as I do not know the correct terminology, lets just call it processing, easier for me.

Note all of these people are doing this for FREE, as they like the idea, not the money.

Cooperation.

So I started off with a seemingly crazy idea of giving food away for free, and it has grown, and grown so much that every part of the project is covered by willing and able (qualified) farmers or people.

This for me goes to prove, that actions speak louder than words, and no idea is too far fetched, if you want it, make it happen.

Let take a look at my other gardens for sharing smaller food varieties than wheat/barley etc.

In there are cucumbers, to beans, parsley, carrots, herbs, raspberries and a whole load more.

That is full of carrots, tomatoes, peas, beans, onions and again loads more.*

The image above is a raspberry patch with some tomatoes also, and the apple orchards to the rear, I make cider also and give it away in the autumn, plus grow 6 different varieties of apples, from cooking to various eating varieties.

If I had listened to other people I would never have done this.

Never give up on your dreams just because other people say you can not do something, if we are to get a balance in this world, it is never going to be with fiat money or with crony capitalism. I know this, so I changed me, after I changed me, all these other people around me changed themselves, it has to start somewhere, I started it here. Maybe dig up that nice lawn you cut every 2 weeks to compete with John next door, and grow some food to share with John instead.

It started off with 2.3 acres, I would say we have used 3 or 4x that amount of our fields for this now.

Deliberators verdict = food is free, and it is time to share, cooperation not force is the key.

As always, have a superb week.

What a wonderful project!

Where I live we don't even have community gardens. But in a nearby town, a university town with a good source of young, strong labor (students) there is a community charity that will come to your garden and pick whatever you want them to and then they distribute it at their food bank.

This benefits so many, especially people who have planted fine gardens and fruit trees over the years, but as they become older and their children move away, and the trees get larger and more productive, they just can't keep up and the fruit goes to waste. Plant a few cucumbers or tomatoes or squash and they can quickly get out of hand! So they call the charity and it's win-win-win all the way around.

This isn't a rural area and there is no agricultural acreage to speak of, but it's an idea that other communities could do.

That sounds superb, may I ask are you city bound, as in living in one? I used too, I think to be honest I could not again, I like the quiet, the calm, and the animals now, hence why I live in the middle of nowhere remarkable, and do not speak much of the local lingo, it suits me fine.

Yes, I live in a city, a small one in Southern California near San Bernardino. When my grandparents arrived here (1920's) there was nothing but miles of citrus groves and my uncle had a large chicken ranch. Trees are gone, smelly chickens are gone. Now it's miles of tract homes and industrial buildings. Very little open acreage left. One of our neighbors had a few chickens but someone complained and they're gone. Loud parties seem to be okay though.

Great work man, I can tell u from my own experience growing food to eat is very challenging but rewarding as u know. Our homes back yard is treated by my wife as an oasis. Its not small but not huge and she packs every inch with something that can be eaten and or sniffed/admired. So i by association I am back there with her a lot while this all happens and its lots of work. Keep up the good work and a great idea!

A man of similar design, I guess we all gravitate to our own kind, and the greedy money people stick to trending, you sound like awesome people, keep up the good life, and give that lady a hug from me, what a superb lady you have, I do hope you cherish her, have a great week my friend.

Kind words thank you. Its funny because almost each post u have I am thinking wow I either practice or believe the same thing and similar thought process. Keep up the good work.

....In there are cucumbers, to beans, parsley, carrots, herbs, raspberries and a whole load more.

....ah, you're picking up all the technical jargon already !

LOL I do try, though when weeding, I keep pulling up plants, much to the frustration of my good lady.

lol, I'm useless with plants - I grew up on a sheep farm, so know one end of a sheep from another...

...and no smart remarks!... I've heard 'em all. lol)

Are you Welsh lol

...that was a piss poor attempt.

..and no.

Yeh well, there you have it.

My husband does that. I suspect it's his sneaky way of getting out of doing the weeding!

Are you insinuating he does it on purpose? like ironing clothes with the iron turned up full to burn a few? like washing up badly, so he never has to do it again? damn, she is on to us lads, :-) I will admit YES I am guilty of such behaviour lol, and I am not afraid to admit it.

Insinuating? Not at all. Stating it as a known fact! My husband also did (does) that with the shopping, bringing home the 'wrong' groceries because, you know, he's just so helpless at it.

But men aren't the only ones who do this. My mother always pretended that the lawnmower scared her. She knew very well it would end up being her job if she admitted she knew how to use it.

Ha how refreshing, honesty, got to love it, before the world goes full on into hysterics with the new breed of cry babies and safe rooms, plus your mom sounds just like my mom lol.

Unbelievably awesome and praiseworthy!! HUGE KUDOS, my friend. I have 5+ acres of farm land here sitting idle, atm, and would love it if people had the interest in such a project in this area. Unfortunately, others have tried. But, no one shows up to help until harvest time, and then many of those expect everything to have been already picked for them!

Shame that, and to be fair I thought I would struggle here, as did my wife, then one by one people just turned up and offered to help, word of mouth and all, and you know the best part, I hardly speak a word of the lingo, though my wife does. And people just love the idea, so it was born just like that.

Are you an area where little food is locally grown, and available for sale? Here there are MANY roadside vegetable stands, and most would rather pay than pick for free. Whether they are too busy, or too lazy, or both... I'm not sure.

no, quite the opposite, there is a lot of food grown here, though most of it goes to feed other countries, the UK is one of them, as for the life of me I can not buy lamb here, or Brussels sprouts, it all goes to the UK, it is a lazy culture, one that needs to be changed.

You can't buy lamb here in the USA either, unless you go to a specialty shop and pay over $10 per pound for it--if you can find it at all.

Fantastic mate. I grow some fruits, veg and berries etc on my small 520 square meter house block. I end up giving around half of it away most years. Not that i have much area i do ok.

Sounds like you do fine considering the size, keep at it my friend, one by 1 we can change the world, stay awesome.

Yes doing ok with it and like you if i have to pay rates on the land i want it producing something usefull back. Thanks mate :)

Hey @deliberator ... sometimes I forget about all the 'good' work you're involved with in such a variety of ways; thanks for the reminder.

I'm a City boy too as you know (with 'country' in heart) learned a bit about growing in a patch of dirt about 2 feet by 20 a number of years ago. After picking out the old beer and soda cans, plastic of every description, rusting metal objects (don't know how ancient) I turned the soil, planted some seed and...something actually grew...actually 'everything' grew...

By the way...You 'are', "a crazy foreigner" you've proved it often enough here on steemit...and I'm happy to be included within that group.

Ciao

you just made a very angry man smile, thanks bro, I am happy to call you that and my friend also. See my latest post to see why I am angry, and a lot sad, I will not be writing much today, I am getting off my head instead.

Happy to call you 'friend' as well...
