Irori Sanzoku is a family tradition for us as soon as I get to Hiroshima. We fell in love with the bandit folklore as much as we did the food the first time around, so we always make a point to return each trip. The bandit folklore are tales of bandits who use to use these mountain as escape trails so much of the menu is made from the bandits hasty style of eating.
Tonight was one of our finest dinners here starting with their signature charcoal roast chicken and handmade udon noodles. There was 6 in our party so we also ordered the charcoal grill beef set which also includes an assortment of vegetables.
The side dishes included what is referred to on the menu as "edible wild plant" so you already know I had to try it.
The locals said that this plant is also eaten before and during beer drinking sessions because of the plant's superior absorption abilities.
A common side dish in Japan and a lot of Asian countries is friend gyoza which are basically fried wontons and at Irori Sanzoku, they have the best in the area.
I also enjoyed the fried potatoes on with a creamy cheese filling. An appetizer I will surely eat again upon my next trip.
The excellent dinner was topped by a few rounds of hot sake out of bamboo shot glasses which added some extra astonishment for the bandit style dinner.
Here's a sample of the menu and hope you all get to visit Irori Sanzoku Kuga 1 day soon. Thanks for joining us on Ate Great 14.
