How about this for a heroic story: Benevento goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli scored an injury-time equaliser against footballing giants AC Milan to earn his team their first ever Serie A point.

Brignoli, who’s on loan from Juventus, headed in a Danilo Cataldi free-kick in the 6th minute of injury time,to end a record-breaking run of 14 defeats.

Giacomo Bonaventura put Milan ahead after 38 minutes at the Stadio Vigorito before George Puscas pulled minnows Benevento level five minutes into the second half.

But 7 minutes later Milan were back in front through Nikola Kalinic, and they began to look comfortable. Then with 15 minutes of normal time to play Alessio Romagnoli was sent off for a second bookable offence, and this inspired Benevento to a first ever point.

They threw everything at Milan in desperate hope of an equalizer, and just when it seemed like they were going to fall short, in the final seconds of the game, and staring at their 15th straight defeat, Brignoli jumped highest after a desperate last free-kick to head the ball into the back of the net.

Benevento players celebrate with Hero Brignoli

There were scenes of euphoria as the players ran up to the home crowd. They had lost every game of their Serie A existence until they came up against one of Europe’s biggest clubs, but then Brignoli the hero saved the day. It’s a day that will go down in history for the Italian minnows, and one which Brignoli will never forget.

"I'm not just happy for me but for everyone," Brignoli said. "We've lost so many games undeservedly with goals in the 90th minute but now it's our turn to celebrate.

"It's a dream to be in Serie A although we hoped that it would have turned out better than this. There was nothing to lose. I just closed my eyes and jumped. It was a goalkeeper's goal, not a forward's goal."

Benevento have never been in Serie A or won a point before Brignoli's 95th minute goal

Milan, who sacked manager Vincenzo Montella earlier this week and replaced him with youth-team boss Gennaro Gattuso, were shellshocked. And the new coach was disappointed.

"It hurts. A knife wound would have been less painful than that goal. I would never have expected to concede a goal in the last minute with the opposition goalkeeper scoring," the new manager said.

Serie A debutants Benevento - who were in Serie C in 2015-16, had lost more games at the start of a season than any other team in history, can now rightfully claim to have a point, and Brignoli, a goalkeeper, can lay claim to Benevento’s most famous moment.

Incredible. What a story! And he's a Juventus player, too, haha.

Yeah, how ironic. I bet the Juve fans were laughing. Great story though, and good luck to them for the rest of the season!

Great goal! I m glad for Benevento, but at the same time I m very sorry for Genaro Gatuso...

Yes, it was great to see. As for Gatuso, I'm sure he'll be fine, he has a big bank balance.

unbelievable....what a goal from the keeper.
