Two new wildfires in Northwestern Ontario

in forest •  6 years ago

Two wildfires were detected Monday in the northwest of the province, bringing the total to 18. Five were still under control.

Some were near the village of Pikangikum First Nation. One of them, which was extinguished, was even on the territory of the First Nation.

A second was 10 km from the village and a third, 25 km. The latter covered 7600 hectares at the end of the day.

Water bombers were fighting against the flames. Sprinklers had also been installed on some buildings.

The Aboriginal community was evacuated in the spring because of another forest fire. The last evacuees returned home in mid-June.

The Red Lake 23 fire burned 16 km from the village of Keewaywin First Nation. It stretched over 30,000 hectares.

At present, the risk of fire is high or extreme in the region.
