Forgotten Friday: The Wall of Nine Windows. (Original Photos)

It's Forgotten Friday again!  Every Friday I share some kind of cool abandoned, deserted, or otherwise forgotten piece of civilization that we've came across on our travels.

Today, we're having a look at an old aqueduct found on the island Sao Miguel of the Azores archipelago.  It's found on the western side of the island and we passed it on a hike to some awesome overlooks.

It's hard to find information of any old architecture on the island that isn't in Portuguese.  My understanding from what I could find is that this aqueduct was decommissioned in 1888.... but who knows when it was actually built.  The amount of mosses and lichens would indicate a few hundred years ago, at least.

The way nature has been reclaiming the structure is awesome.  Bright orange lichens, moss everywhere, even ferns were sprouting from the face of the wall.  From the limited amount of information available to me, I also found this section of the aqueduct is known as "The Wall of Nine Windows", for obvious reasons.

A bit farther up the road was this sections of the same aqueduct.  I believe in it's functional days, the entire structure transported water nearly 12km across the island.  Definitely as cool find.  The cows were a cool bonus too. :)
