How Harmful Fossil Fuels are and Why We Need to Stop Using Them

Did you know that clean energy creates more jobs? When I heard that, I thought about the Dakota Access Pipeline. Why would President Trump sign an executive order to build the pipeline when he is saying that he was going to create more jobs? "If we can get that pipeline built. A lot of jobs; 28,000 jobs. Great construction jobs," Trump says. But is it really “a lot of jobs?”

According to Environmental and Energy Study Institute, “The Ecotech Institute used the Bureau of Labor Statistics definition of a green job to calculate the number of clean job openings in 2014. The organization found a 13 percent increase in clean job openings from 2013 to 2014, from 3.6 million clean job openings in 2013 to 3.8 million openings in 2014. The institute estimates that there were 1.2 million clean job openings in the first three months of 2015.”

That is a big difference! Instead of focusing on building a pipeline that will pollute freshwater rivers, we should focus on expanding the clean energy business. What do people have to gain from working for a coal company. All you do is dig for coal. Working for a solar panel or windmill company, you do a lot of electrical engineering which is a lot more interesting than digging. If we stop using fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gases and use more clean energy, we can create millions of more jobs.

Coal, oil, and natural gas account for 83% of the nation’s energy! That’s a lot of greenhouse gases that are put into the air, and all of these resources are burned and turned into carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapor. These gases are what make the greenhouse effect.

The world knows that global warming is a problem, but the real reasons why we use more fossil fuels, are because fossil fuels are more effortlessly available, and are a lot cheaper to get as well. Also, large amounts of energy are produced using fossil fuels; but those are the only large reasons why we still get fossil fuels. Some of the disadvantages include: it is more expensive to buy as a citizen for electricity, and burning fossil fuels produces pollution from nitrous oxides, and acid rain from sulfur dioxide.

The reasons that we need to stop using fossil fuels are because it will increase the global temperature, and I think that here in California, we would not like it hotter. Global warming will melt the ice in the North and South Poles, which will then increase the sea level. Increasing the sea level will cause more flooding, and lots of people that live on the coast will lose their homes.

Global warming is caused when humans put carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and ozone into the air. All of these are put into the air when humans burn oil, coal, and, natural gas. All of these gases put together to make a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere, and a greenhouse effect is what causes global warming.

Clean energy does not create greenhouse gases directly. It is a lot safer to use than coal or oil. Nuclear power plants do not harm the air environment, but it does leave radioactive waste which can injure or kill humans and animals. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, but it still emits carbon dioxide and water vapor into the air which yet causes the greenhouse gases

These are some of the reasons why we need to use more clean energy. I am saying that clean energy will protect our future. We can stop using fossil fuels. When renewable sources are used, the demand for other fossil fuels is reduced. Fossil fuels are a massive danger to our future. Let's make it, so our children’s children don't have to try to fix the mistakes that we made.
