Moringen

Moringen ist eine kleine Stadt voller Fachwerkhäuser und anderer alter Gebäude, in einer idyllischen Umgebung unweit von Göttingen. Ich habe schon einige Male im Sommer dort eine Mittagspause eingelegt, wenn ich auf der Fahrt zu einem Campingwochenende dort auf den nächsten Bus warten musste.

Moringen is a small town in Lower Saxony full of half-timbered houses and other old buildings, in an idyllic surrounding not far from Göttingen. I have had a break for lunch there several times in summer when I had to wait for the next bus on the way to a camping weekend nearby.

Glücklicherweise lag diese Bushaltestelle nicht irgendwo an einer Ausfallstraße, sondern idyllisch gelegen an einem Gebäudeensemble, das geradezu darauf wartete, fotografiert zu werden :)

Fortunately, this bus stop was not located at big intersection, but idyllically situated at an ensemble of buildings that was just waiting to be photographed

Die Bushaltestelle hieß "Amtsfreiheit" und das hatte schon bei der Planung der Fahrt meine Neugier geweckt und ich hatte recherchiert. Es ist einerseits wohl eine postalische Adresse, ich konnte aber nicht herausbekommen, woher der Begriff kommt¹. An dieser Stelle befand sich einmal eine Burg mit großem Vorwerk (= der Burg zugehörigen landwirtschaftlichen Gebäude und Anlagen).

The bus stop was called "Amtsfreiheit" and this word had already aroused my curiosity when planning the trip and I had done some research. On the one hand it is probably a postal address, but I could not find out where the term comes from, the combination of "Amt" (=office, administration) and "Freiheit" (=freedom, liberty)¹. At this place there was once a castle with a large outwork (= agricultural buildings and facilities belonging to the castle).

Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde, wohl nach einigen größeren Bränden, die Anlage neu errichtet. Heute sind verschiedene Einrichtungen hier untergebracht: Rathaus, Heimatmuseum, Polizeiwache. Und davor nicht nur eben jene Bushaltestelle, sondern auch ein Zunftbaum!

In the 18th century, probably following several major fires, the complex was rebuilt. Today it houses various institutions: town hall, local history museum, police station. And in front of it not only that bus stop, but also a guild pole!

¹ Sind Historiker anwesend? Könnte "Freiheit" zurückzuführen sein darauf, dass es Allodialland war, also dem Besitzer frei zur Verfügung stand?

Any historians here? Is the "freedom" perhaps connected to the area beeing an allod and the owner being free to do with it what he wanted?
