Regulated doesn't mean the same today as it did in 1787.

The illiberal Left, of all ideologies available, should be the most keenly, not only aware, but supportive of the phenomenon of words changing meaning over time. Hell, they're happy to jettison existing definitions, replace them with nothing, and still use the words.

Even people like me who sometimes foolishly push back on change have to accept this.

That said, it should be pretty clear to every thinking person that, when it comes to interpretation of the Constitution, we should, and the courts generally do, interpret the words on the basis of what the framers intended.

Yes, language has changed since 1787. That doesn't mean that we just get to manipulate what the law of the land is because we changed how we used certain words over the last 236 years. If the word "literally" were anywhere in the Constitution, it would be nonsensical to claim that the passage could also mean "figuratively" because the dictionary people just added that as an acceptable use of the word.

So, the word "regulated" is deeply important.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Gun grabbers continue to assume that the word "regulated" meant the same thing in 1787 as it means today -- it didn't.

For the framers, the word regulated basically meant a group that is organized and equipped. That doesn't mean anything close to "regulated" like government regulations of the meat packing industry or anything.

Still, you don't have to really dive into the intricacies of the evolution of language to understand that the people who wrote the Second Amendment didn't intend to only entrust guns to citizens who were under vigilant government oversight.

"What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms. the remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. what signify a few lives lost in a century or two? the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. it is its natural manure."
—Jefferson

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!”
—Franklin

"I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers.”
—Mason

"Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of.”
—Madison
