According to the bible all human beings come into the world with the ability to choose between beatitude and misfortune (Luke 6:20-26). but this freedom implies a responsibility: "´I have the right to do anything´, you say - but not everything is beneficial. ´I have the right to do anything´- but not everything is constructive", 1 Corinthians 10:23. In the Bible, the flesh represents everything that is opposed to God, that is, greed and selfishness; and what ties us to the pleasures that come from the body from here lust, gluttony. In a way, the flesh and the spirit are present in all of us. But at some point we are forced to choose, whether the spirit or the flesh predominates in us. This is why the Apostle Paul affirms: "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.", Galatians 5:13
Jesus teaches us that we all have a treasure in our hearts, and it is this treasure that moves our will: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also", Matthew 6:21; "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.", Luke 6:45.
Paul asks us to abandon the works that are proper to darkness, that is to say do not indulge the flesh. And accept the law of God ("Love your neighbor as yourself", Luke 12:31): "serve one another humbly in love".
The kingdom of God, the dominion of mercy, the empire of goodness, the reign of perseverance; is fundamentally a choice: we sin or we live righteously (golden rule, Matthew 7:12: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"), we live according to the flesh or we live according to the spirit.
