Choices and More Choices

Everyday we are confronted by choices that change the way we are. Some may be right and some may be wrong. At the time you don't know the out come and choose the one that you think is right for you. Only time will tell if that decision is right and it is what you do with that info that helps you on your next decision.

Life is a constant learning curve and once you stop learning you are dead to the world. I look forward to the unknown and new challenges a bit like an explorer. You have an idea where you are going , but you are not quite sure what route you will take and what the outcome will be. If we didn't take chances in life and played things safe we would be like robots and nothing to look forward to.

I went through a time in my life when I felt like I was on auto pilot. I would drive into work and couldn't even remember how I got there. It was as though the 1 hour drive was done in my subconscious state and it never even happened. I know I am alert and switch off when I am driving as you need to concentrate. The whole process had become so routined and mundane it was as though my brain had switched off and was resting. It paid the bills and that was it and was slowly killing me.

Thinking back I am not overly surprised as this carried on for around 10 years and only noticed the way I was feeling after about the 8th year. Routines are good, but not repeatedly over and over like this as it becomes ground hog day everyday of your life. I feel sorry for individuals who are trapped in these routines and know first hand what it feels like.

Life is too import and and too short to be living like this and was one of the reasons I changed things up all those years ago. They call it a rat race as everyone tries to make a buck doing whatever it takes. Quality of life should be more important than anything else and take priority. Happiness comes first before a buck for me these days and money will never be the number one driving force behind what and how I do things.

I was much younger then with added pressures and the pressures are still there, but I am wiser and know what I am doing. When I come to the crossroad of decisions I don't hesitate now as I know what is right for me and that is what counts today. Happiness has to be the number one priority because being a miserable rich old bugger isn't fun.

I totally understand where you are coming from. My job that I have been doing for the past 15 or so years doesn't pay nearly as much as it should since I am in the public sector. If I were in the private sector I would probably be making three to four times what I do now. The hours are good here though and the environment isn't stressful or high pressure. Those are some of the things that I consider a trade off for not getting paid as much. I get to be home with my wife and dog 95% of the evenings and I also get to spend weekends and holidays with my family.

Happiness and being a rich old bugger, now that's the aim!
