Syrup

Syrup hasn't played much of a part in my life. As an adult, I've only had maple syrup once a year on Mardi gras. Even then I sometimes have lemon and sugar. It always surprises me that other nations eat pancakes all year round.

I associate syrup with a powerful dark red liquid known as jollop in my house when I was a child. It was only available on prescription. It was a strong cough syrup. I was dosed with it when I had a 'five till nine' cough, which was whenever I caught a cold.

Jollop was supposed to taste of cherries but it was more chemically than any other flavour.

It worked very well on my cough so I wonder why it's not prescribed anymore.
