Coin

The thing that springs to my mind initially is ' to coin a phrase' because I've never really understood how the saying originated.

I looked it up and the original meaning did make sense. It meant that you were making up a new phrase.

However, it was misused so much that it got a new meaning. It's the new meaning that confuses me. Now it can means that you are using a cliche.

Hmm, I understand a bit better, at least :)
