Day 761: 5 Minute Freewrite: Wednesday - Prompt: red light

For @mariannewest in @freewrite

Ten years ago or so I was in Amsterdam and visited Red Light District. And of course, I saw women standing in the show-windows in their bras and underpants. To tell you the truth this didn't impress me and if not for my wife I wouldn't even go there. Going with her was especially unpleasant because, despite the warning we've been given in the hotel, she still photographed them for good memory.

I guess this was done so that later on she could show it to her conservative girlfriends and together they could look at these photos and express their collective indignation "This is so horrible! How could they allow this?!"

A more interesting story about Red Light District I heard from a buddy of mine. One of his friends, who live in the Netherland, not only owns one of these shops but married one of the girls who worked there.

"Of course," he explained, "she doesn't do it anymore."

I recall reading Remarque's book "Three comrades" that he mentioned that the prostitute's dream is a matrimonial bed. Knowing a little about Remarque, I think one can trust his opinion on that issue. )

Sort Order:

the prostitute's dream is a matrimonial bed.

It seems like a cruel joke, but I guess not, that attends to a contradiction or something like that. Bring me a little closer to the meaning of "Remarque", cultural distance distances me from understanding.
Greetings, @mgaft1.

Gteetings @zeleiracordero!

Sure.

Erich Maria Remarque - one of my favorite writers.

Here's a bit about him
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_Maria_Remarque

Three Comrades is one of my favorite novels.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Comrades_(novel)

The novel is set in Germany after WWI (around 1924-1925) when the country was in a great depression and there was a scarcity of jobs. The protagonist is Robert Locamp works in the restaurant of a small hotel as a pianist where all the local prostitutes reside. He became their confidant, someone who they share their secrets with.

One evening there was a little celebration in this hotel as one of the girls was getting married. Her husband didn't care as he knew that most of these girls didn't do it as their "calling" but because it was the only way they could survive. More so, they already had their "fun" and now their only interest was their family life.

Remqrque's more famous book is called "All Quiet on the western front" You might have heard about it. Here's the 70's movie about it I found on Youtube

Ah, okay. It seemed to me that something important had to be behind his writing that I couldn't understand because I didn't have any references. Thank you for lightening my ignorance. I am going to read the information you have kindly given me.

It would best if you'd find the novel in Spanish. Since it is originally in German, there are really no advantages to reading it in English. I read it in Russian and it was fabulous in translation.

I’ve heard about the red light district in Holland. Probably better to be regulated like this.😂

I guess so. Vegas also has regulated prostitution. But surprisingly Vegas' massage regulation forbid cross gender massage. I guess they protected the oldest profession in the world from "strikebreakers." )))

I didn’t know Vegas had regulated prostitution. Cross gender massage- how would they know the client was a cross gender person?
I remember seeing a 6 ft person in high heels , dress and purse but had a day old beard.

Cross-gender massage means a female is working on a male and vise Versa. Surely, having a regulation doesn't mean that it is adhered to privately. But in massage parlors held in casinos, this is the rule they adhere to.

That was back in the 90-s though when I lived in Vegas. I don't know what do they do nowadays when a person can change gender by a flick of his/her/their finger. )))

Thanks for explaining. I got that mixed up about the cross-gender person. 😊

I think I would like to visit the Red Light district, for educational reasons.
