"I hate celery!"
The Mother started to hum.
"Mm, mm, mm, mm-mm-mm-mm"
The Child stuck out his tongue
The Mother pulled out her thumb
and waggled it in the air
"Will you look at that!" she warbled
still singing the tune she had earlier hummed
The Child threw a stone over the edge of the cliff
then another and another
until the Mother’s song
grew to the howl of a wolf,
the whine of a coyote at a fresh kill,
a call between red-winged blackbirds,
and the child ate his lunch
This is my entry to @mariannewest daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is celery.
A true five minute freewrite, I just let the words, which felt like nonsense as I was writing, come out for about three minutes. I then went back to take stuff out and correct typos until the timer went off. None of this was rearranged.
