A thesis:
Freud attempted to exercise principles of pure science in his examination of the human psyche. In this endeavor, he failed miserably. Every case he had was different, so even though his ideas continue to be of great interest, they are of little use from a scientific standpoint, as none of his findings are reproducible. Furthermore, it is very apparent from reading his work, that he came to his subject matter with a particular perspective already in mind. Thus, while much of what he says is certainly true, his truths are bounded truths; truths that are only true if you are interpreting reality from a very narrow perspective.
One aspect of his theory is the role of the superego. The superego is his interpretation of the human conscience. He does not seem to see much about it as being inherent; rather, he sees it as being the repository of influences of what Lacan would later refer to as "the Other" and "others." His therepeutic method, however, was not to teach his patients to abandon the superego, but rather to bring it into proper balance with the rest of their persons (the Id and the Ego).
But if one were to take Freud's idea with an eye to manipulate the behavior of others, one could, through repeated suggestion, cause a person to exercise control over themselves in the manner which suits you.
That is what the PC culture is, and it has proven to be wildly successful.
But Freud was only partially correct. The weak minded cannot help but buy into the suggestion, and accept the moral matrix of control. But there is a growing contingent that is immune to the manipulative suggestions of the modern academics and media personalities, and have come to see that manipulation for what it is, and has come to resent it.
The conscience of the general public has been deeply corrupted, but enough of us know better now. The post-freudian project is failing.
