We found this gorgeous little Painted Reed Frog on our glass sliding door - South Africa, KZN

in frog •  8 years ago  (edited)

This morning my daughter called me to take a look at this very sweet little frog. I have have never seen one of these here (Kwa-Zulu Natal) before, so asked a friend (Facebook, because I know some cool people!) and researched it from there.

I discovered that although the species is native to South Africa it is considered invasive, since it has spread rapidly from its original habitat in the Western Cape. (Which is far from where I live!) They lay their eggs in newly created bodies of water. That makes complete sense, as we have recently had quite a bit of rain after a long drought and there are puddles all over our property. We are also set in the hills, adjoining large areas of farmland. This cute little frog measured about 4cm/2cm. Since I am an online seller, I had my tape measure ready!

In most cases, it's necessary or at least logical. I still find it strange though. We treat wildlife like illegal immigrants but call them invasive instead. Even the animals must respect our imaginary lines or face the consequences.

Life lived for millions of years before these lines were thought up. Now we see extinction. Life is overdosing. Too many lines.

Very astute observation.

Hey there EENBOOM. Lovely frog indeed!

And the cute tummy!

Is this little Frog now a family pet? Or ,is it merely on Holiday from the Western Cape?. Interesting little fellow!

Nope, little froggy went its' froggy way... My young son said he has seen a lot of them. He actually spends time in the garden!
