To Skip Or Not To Skip Breakfast?

To Skip Or Not To Skip Breakfast?

My dear sweet mother always told me, “Don’t skip breakfast! It is the most important meal of the day. You are “breaking” your fast.” But is it really the most important meal of the day or is it just a meal? History shows us that Mom, you were right! At night when you are sleeping, your body is still at work digesting the food that we have taken in during the day, that is why the first meal, after the sustaining of food for 8 hours is called breaking the fast or breakfast. My mom is a pretty smart lady!
The debate really is a debate. Some people wake up in the morning so hungry that they cannot wait to eat, while others could wait till lunch. It was once believed that we really do need the nutrients to power our body and brain and to maintain a healthy weight. A study from the scientists at Cornell University tells us that not eating breakfast a few times a week may indeed be a good way to lose weight. Data from this study says that skipping breakfast will not cause you to eat more in the next meal.

Now if you are a diabetic, pregnant, hypoglycemic a healthy, (organic, non GMO, non sugary) is needed for you. Also if you are a hard-core athlete who is training really you must eat to ensure your success and skipping breakfast is not a choice.
Skipping breakfast really depends on you. No two people were created exactly the same so we are all going to eat and metabolize food differently. We are unique with different biochemistry, activities, genetics and our own personal way of doing things. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published a study and put to rest the myth at eating breakfast is required for losing successful weight. The scientists concluded that if breakfast isn’t your thing then skip it. You live in your body and you know just how you feel but skipping breakfast is not everyone’s cup of tea.

If you are someone who has to eat until your stomach is bulging this may be a really good idea because it just might be easier then cutting back your portion or portions. Breakfast like a king may just make you really hungry and you will eat all day. Learn which foods keep you satiated and which just make you hungrier. Stay away from refined carbohydrates, sugars and processed foods. These foods make it really hard for your insulin to keep up and makes your blood sugar fall. It can also put your body into insulin resistance; you don’t know you are full because your body doesn’t tell you that you are so you keep eating. This is also known as rebound hunger, or leptin resistance. Leptin tells you to stop eating but if you are leptin resistant you don’t know you are full and ghrelin kicks in telling your body it is hungry even though you are full and this results in weight gain.

So the question still is, should I eat breakfast or not? Studies show pro and cons to both sides of this coin without any totally clear-cut answer. It really depends who you are, what you are comfortable with and if you do have a “problem” are you willing to try not eating breakfast to see if it helps. Doing this could improve your energy levels. When you skip breakfast in this case you force your body to use fat stores for energy resulting in weight loss. This will help you examine yourself and your true relationship with food. Why are you eating and how much really did fill you up? Practice mindful eating, by concentrating on how much you are eating, are you really hungry or is it just a habit that I need to change, something I just do.

Did you know that when you do not eat for a while a cellular process called autophagy happens? This process cleans waste products left by dead and damaged cells and if your body doesn’t do this it contributes to the aging process and age related diseases. So skipping breakfast can help you look younger. According to Dr Ananya Mandal, MD The word autophagy is derived from Greek words “auto” meaning self and “phagy” meaning eating. Autophagy is a normal physiological process in the body that deals with destruction of cells in the body.
Skipping breakfast can also be viewed as intermittent fasting. This has been shown to improve metabolic health, increase weight loss and reduce caloric intake, however this, I will say again is not for everyone.

The most important thing that I can say is be healthy. If you are eating breakfast choose foods that are organic and good for you, whole grains that are not genetically modified and eggs that are range fed without GMO”S or given antibiotics. If you are not, eat when you are hungry but choose the same non-GMO organic foods. Eat the rainbow and stay away from processed foods, your body will thank you for it and for sure you will lose weight.

Some times 10 minutes of sleep is worth more to me than having breakfast.

Man this is the most important meal of the day! I like to run as soon as I wake up, burn the fat, then eat breakfast. I hit the weights after work usually around 6. Gotta eat breakfast even if its just a bar or shake. Don't miss out on grow time!
