A little more information about language learning with regard to the written word. I do not recommend to just pick up a book in Spanish and read. It is advised to use the books that are written with language learning in mind.

In fact, in these books you will find that the more advanced level books even give reading comprehension questions for discussions. I actually take the time to answer these questions aloud at the end of the reading sessions. I know that sounds dorky but it is important to exercise creative thinking and forming sentences. Even though there is no one to correct me or tell if my sentences even make sense, I do believe that the exercise alone is beneficial. In other words, if you can’t think of what to say, try to say it in a different way.

This brings up another point about speaking in general.
As learners of a language it is our inclination to feel ashamed or embarrassed when speaking and stumbling over mis-pronuncians or errors. The inclination is to be afraid that others will judge you and think you are stupid. Well, you couldn’t be more incorrect. As it turns out the people you are speaking with are honored that someone would take the time to try and learn there language. Furthermore they are always friendly and interested in helping you to speak well. I have had so many instances when I just try to say something and stumble and the person will actually take a few moments to give me a language lesson.

Do not fall into the trap that a lot of extranjeros fall into of only hanging out with people that only speak English.

The best way to be in a place is to experience the culture of the place, and the only way to do that is to speak that language.
