Puppets in the community Update #34

Recycling is a fundamental part of this puppet workshop in the community. That is why in this publication I will talk about the importance of the materials used by the children.

There are many puppet theater companies that use different types of industrialized materials in order to give a cleaner aesthetics to the dolls, the problem that this practice represents is that the materials come from factories that are highly polluting, in the workshop community puppets instead we use waste materials such as plastic bottles, cardboard, newspaper and other elements that we can find in the street.

One of the main classes is just the use and handling of waste materials, most children are unaware of what they can do with a plastic bottle for example which is used to make the head of the finger puppet. At first the reasons for them to creatively decide what they can do with the plastic bottle. After a few minutes children wear out their knowledge indicating that the bottle should be discarded others simply don't know what to do with the bottle.

After a few minutes they realize that the head of the puppet is a plastic bottle of mineral water. this is where the instruction on how to handle waste materials to make puppets begins.

in general and I feel that children bring their own plastic bottle but an even more interesting exercise is to take them to some garbage dump and carefully select the bottles they will use which are then disinfected with chlorine, vinegar and always supervised by an adult to avoid any type of contamination. in this way the awareness is fostered that those elements that are voted for in the garbage can be transformed into artistic objects.

As well as the plastic bottle there are also other elements of waste that is used and intervened, this is the case of the newspaper that next to a starch creates a paste to make stuck in the bottle and thus give shape to be your mouth nose ears and some detail that requires design. Already in that moment the children forget that it is a plastic bottle and begin to see in the bottle the shape of a head which as I mentioned in the previous post develop depending on the cultural particularities of their environment, can be a popular character or can be a historical icon The idea is to disassociate them from the images they have in their mind product of the consumption of television and internet.

So far a minimum of industrialized materials are used such as yarn, cold paint, glue. The impact is minimal because a doll can last at least 15 years if you make a coating treatment of the paint to protect it from dust and moisture. After 15 years it can do a maintenance to retouch and to leave again operative. Only the bottle has an approximate duration of 300 years enough time for a child to believe that he reaches adulthood and still keep his puppet.

When the puppets are almost finished, the same children give a personalized name to their puppet which gives more dynamism, emotion and sense of belonging to a unique brand that generates each child. After the doll is completely finished, a conversation is held to verify the children's opinions regarding the traditional cartoons imposed by the mass media.
