- Hardcore Polypores -

The snow has just freshly melted here in Växjö Sweden after sticking around for many days. I was on a walk and had my eye out for any #FungusAmongUs that I could take photographs of for #FungusFriday!

Here I present you with a series of images taken of the fruiting bodies of a couple of Polypores I found. I really like these kind of fungi even though they aren't nearly as interesting to look at as the usual mushrooms I photograph. One of my favorite characteristics of these types of fungi are the pores. Gills are usually one of my favorite characteristics to visually capture and the pores are the gills of this variety of fungus.

I just read that these Polypore Fungi can be signs of good health in natural or old-growth forests here in Europe. The word Polypore comes from the Greek words poly meaning Many and poros meaning Pore.... so, Polypore literally means Many Pores! Some of these images really capture the essence of that name.

These fruit bodies have a hard shell like top for a cap and the pores on the underside. I took photos of one last fall that was weeping! Sometimes, the porous underside even looks soft and fuzzy on some of these fungi! These fruit bodies are wet and slick from the melted snow and the way the sunlight was cast on these at the moment of taking the photos had an awesome richness to the woody tones of the rims of these Fungi! I really find the contrast in colors here to be quite gorgeous!

I had to include this last photo because of the composition mostly! I really like how the Moss has this freshly opened seed and a rotting dead Mushroom. The snow apparently had it's effect on the Mushrooms... but the Moss never seems harmed. I am really looking forward to Spring when the fruit bodies are more abundant in all their fungal varieties!

Almost spit my coffee reading the title :D Spot on!

Cool mushrooms too... the pores are like a delicate sponge.

I am glad you got it! That's awesome =) And they are pretty delicate looking up close when you see the pores compared to that rugged woody exterior. Thanks for stopping by!

I love word games! :)
