Because who WOULDN'T want to do ski jumps behind a galloping horse right down the middle of the road?

I apologize for the lack of mountains in this post.

I got distracted this past weekend by Leadville Ski Joring.

Sorry!

Ski joring is pretty much just as crazy as it looks.

This is the sort of nonsense that happens when humans decide to live 2 miles above sea level where the air's reduced oxygen saturation interferes with proper brain function.

Lazy description of how it works

Ski joring is a timed event. Horse and rider tow a skier down the middle of Leadville's main drag racing the clock at full gallop.

Skier attempts to ski through all the various gate and jump markers, hit and stick all the jumps, and collect all the orange rings that are hanging along the edges of the course. Penalties are applied if the skier fails to do those things.

Best times win cash prizes.

Also, the rider is not allowed to fall off the horse, the skier must stay upright and on at least one ski for the entire run, and the horse is not supposed to trip and break its leg.

Sounds pretty fun, right?

Last year a horse tripped and broke its leg and now that horse is fucking dead.

Speaking of abrupt transitions, check out these two videos of ski joring I took yesterday! I can't figure out how to embed them so here they are in a nice bulleted list:

  • Those links are probably wrong.

Also … DTube, DTube, DTube. You make me crazy, DTube. I had to try three different browsers before you finally let me upload my videos and "snaps".

Oh, it looks like people are leaving comments on my videos. I wasn't expecting that.

And oh, it looks like you can earn rewards directly on DTube?

    Hmm.

I apologize for not finishing this post, I have to go learn more about DTube now.

    Hhhhhhhhhhhhh very funny

Dtube is pretty cool, but you can't embed dtube videos in posts.

For some reason I thought I saw other people doing it. Maybe I just haven't had enough coffee today yet.

only youtube video. You put the link without the "![](" and it just embeds. but dtube nah.

Hold up, hold up. So it's like wakeboarding, only it's on snow and you're being dragged by a horse? Haha Sign me up! What if the horse just stops giving a fuck in the middle of the lap? So, it's a team sport? The rider, the horse and the skier?

You got it, that's pretty much it. Team sport. They're all working together to win. Sometimes the horse actually does just stop giving a fuck, which can be either really funny or really terrifying, depending on how close you are to the course.

That's crazy. But not so crazy that I wouldn't try it...

We can sign up next year as a team. It will be fun. Do you have enough money to buy a horse? We will need a horse.

I probably have a Lego horse somewhere. I have an uncle in North Dakota that might lend us a horse...

Ideally this uncle of yours also has a set of alpine skis and boots that fit me. If so, let's get this ball rolling.

    Wow amazing photographey
