There are a lot of signs in attempted English that are quite fun here in Thailand and when I poke fun at them I am not attempting to say that Thai people are stupid. I think the Thai people are some of the kindest people on the planet and I wish them no harm. That doesn't mean that people don't make mistakes though.
When we see a sign that is in attempted English we will refer to it at "Engrish" which is a word that as far as I know was popularized by the difficulties that some Asian languages have distinguishing between the "L" and "R" sound in many different words. It cuts both ways though, there are a ton of words in Thai that start with an "NG" sound and if you don't think that is hard try to say "ngock" or "ngoo" and then compare it to how a Thai person says those words. You will sound ridiculous.
This recent find was actually entirely in Thai though and since my ability to read Thai is very limited I had to have someone help me to understand why this is funny.
While not ultra-common, there are vinyl shops in major metropolitan areas so people in this country can continue to be hipsters and pretend to their friends that music on a record somehow sounds better than their digital counterparts - which we all know is a lie.
Anyway, the phonetic sounds of the post-it note above is "Kin Jae Fang Dai, Mai Mee Neua"
Translated this means "vegetarians can listen to this, it doesn't contain meat."
Now to me this is really funny because the person who wrote this clearly has a sense of humor and was very aware of what they were doing and just having some fun at the expense of vegetarians. Obviously no music contains meat.
Therefore this is whole new level of trolling that doesn't involve spelling errors at all but is just a perhaps bored shop employee that is taking the piss out of anyone. My friend did tell me that the only reason why he even looked at the stack of records in this hipster store was specifically because of this sign so I guess it is really effective advertising. Since he doesn't even own a record player, like most normal humans these days, he didn't buy any of them though.
It isn't often that stuff like this gets discovered because for the most part Thais, at least as far as business is concerned, are quite "too the point" and avoid humor that at first glance doesn't make any sense. I hope they sold a lot of these records!
