Girls Trip (2017)...not what I expected! So much more!
Movie Synopsis
Best friends Ryan, Sasha, Lisa and Dina are in for the adventure of a lifetime when they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Along the way, they rekindle their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by doing enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.
Girls Night Dinner and a Movie
My friends invited me out to dinner and a movie. I really didn't get too excited when I found out we were watching Girls Trip because I thought it was going to be another predictable girls night out movie. Boy was I wrong! It was definitely a girl power movie, however it was relevant, had a great message, and a laugh riot from beginning to end. I knew it was going to be a fun movie theater experience when my friends and I walked in the movie theater and it was FILLED with WOMEN! Black, White, Latin, Asian women, of all ages, and economic backgrounds were gathered in one theater. Love, energy, and electricity was in the air! There were a few scenes in the movie where my friends and I (as well as the whole movie theater) were full out singing along with the movie and chair dancing like we were we in the club or at karaoke! 😅 So if you are looking for a quiet night out, this movie probably isn't for you. If you are looking to laugh until your cheeks hurt, go out and watch this movie.
Jada Pinkett Smith's performance as a recently divorced single mom was wonderful. I am use to seeing her in powerful fierce roles and her take on Lisa Cooper, a shy, low key, and introverted nurse was refreshing. She had some great scenes where she really stretched her comedy muscles and it worked for her. Not a spoiler alert, but one of my favorite scenes was definitely Jada's character on the zip line in New Orleans! 😜 The movie theater exploded with laughter.
For me, however, the breakout performance had to be that of Tiffany Haddish as Dina. Tiffany Haddish is a comedienne that has had a few TV and movie roles. After her performance in this movie, I have a feeling we will be seeing more of her. She plays Dina, a no nonsense, tell you what's on her mind at any time, proud black woman. She continuously shows her loyalty for her friends and is the bold one of the group. I can't even say enough about her performance. She has great acting chops from her comedic timing to the way she delivers her lines, funny and dramatic. How is it that I have not heard of her before?
Queen Latifah played Sasha Franklin a struggling gossip blogger. Her main story line was her financial and career woes and her relationship with frenemy Ryan Pierce played by Regina Hall. These two characters and their relationship were the main story line of the movie. Ryan Pierce and her "new normal" relationship drove the movie. The ensemble of characters get themselves into HILARIOUS situations at the Essence Festival in New Orleans and like I mentioned above, I was pleasantly surprised how these actresses played their roles. Dare I say it was as funny if not funnier than #Bridesmaids, which is the current staple of funny comedy movies featuring a cast of all women.
Conclusion
Hilarious movie with strong women actors, relevant to issues plaguing women int todays society mixed with side splitting laughter. My recommendation is that this movie is perfect for women of all ages....and men!
